Let public sector workers bargain: poll

Seven out of 10 Americans polled said unionized public employees should have the same right to bargain as employees of private companies, according to a Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll. In addition, 62 percent said it would be unacceptable to eliminate collective bargaining rights for government workers over health care, pension or other benefits, the Wall Street Journal reported.

At the same time, most Americans surveyed said holding the line on pay or benefits for public-sector workers would be acceptable as governments address deficit spending. In fact, 63 percent of respondents would like to see government workers pay more for health care benefits and 68 percent said public sector employees should contribute more for retirement benefits, the article said.
