— As Mother’s Day approaches, many consumers want a personal gift for Mom without spending a fortune.
As a result, Chicago-area coupon websites reported an uptick sales due to bargain shopping for the holiday.
“In recent years with the tough economy, people have been forced to shop smarter. Coupons have lost their stigma and being thrifty became a necessity,” said Jackie Warrick, chief savings officer at CouponCabin in Chicago.
In advance of the holiday, bargain websites like CouponCabin.com and Eversave.com, which provides daily deals by e-mail, catered to moms with discount deals ranging from 10 percent to 80 percent off spa and salon services, restaurant meals, flowers, picture frames and jewelry.
Sarah Barnes was happy she could find a bargain from Eversave for her mother-in-law. “My mother-in-law is kind of a deal hunter, too, so I think she’d be proud of me,” Barnes said.
Many consumers are gravitating to personalized gifts. CouponCabin has seen a 27 percent increase in traffic over last week at Zazzle.com, a site that allows users to customize products. In the Chicago market during the past week, Eversave reported an increase in deals for personalized photo books and canvases.
Some of the deals promote togetherness as well as savings, said Kim Hine, marketing director at Eversave. “You can use these coupons together with your mother. You can take to her to the spa and get a massage at same time as she does,” Hine said.
